I am lateraling soon (in the conflicts process now) and I know my current managing partner is going to handle my resignation abysmally. I’m worried is he going to try to control the narrative with other partners (I’ve personally observed this being done with others that have left). Any advice on how to keep his interference with my other relationships to a minimum?

Are you close enough with the other partners to speak to the directly? If so, I’d try to get ahead of it by talking to them immediately after telling the MP.

The good news is that if they’ve done it before, the other partners probably won’t take what he says all that seriously. I was in a similar situation and made sure to call the other partners who I cared about maintaining a relationship with so they could hear my reasons for leaving from me and answer any questions they had.

Notify everyone else separately first, either by phone or in person. then draft your formal resignation and send that to him by email and cc the other partners you told privately. They will appreciate you giving them the heads up and if he bad mouths you after the fact you’ve already handled it so well no one will pay him any mind. I had a similar experience at my last firm and this is how I handled it.
