To be fair, big law is dominated by white males, and it's tough to ask women and minority associates / partners to do more than their share of recruiting. I'd encourage you to follow up and ask to speak with minority / women attorneys at the firm to get their perspective.
I’m not making light of your statement, but speaking as a white man, it’s pretty tough for me to guess what interviewers are thinking or whether they’re judging me or how to act sometimes. I don’t doubt it’s tougher when there’s an undercurrent of difference running through the conversation (and definitely agree with you that having diversity on the other side of the table is important as well!)
These days, though, firms really do take diversity seriously and we really are desperate to identify and attract great diverse candidates, so I’d say do your best to put all that stuff out of your mind when you’re interviewing. Try to tell yourself that the white guy interviewing you is most likely rooting for you to succeed.
Yikes. I think you're right to walk away.
