The number one tip I have is to be more measured and intentional with your actions.
This looks like:
-practicing emotional regulation - when you’re given news, good or bad, pause before reacting. Always stay calm. Especially when things make you angry. Exhibit control.
-synthesizing and summarizing - when communicating outcomes or status, use this structure: 0 - brief context, 1 - punchline / headline, 2 - impacts, 3 - next steps. Practice being able to give context with 1 or 2 sentences. Assume you won’t give details of analysis or the work done to get the outcome unless asked.
-asking relevant, incisive questions - communicate with intention. Be okay with not speaking or contributing every conversation.
-managing up / reframing a request - executives can be exploratory in thinking and will often want to know or understand things without realizing the true impact of what they’re requesting. This doesn’t mean they’re not smart - it’s just that they rely on people like you to shape their decision or direction. When you get requests or they have ideas, get used to quickly thinking them through and communicating the impact - “hey I know you said that you want us to prioritize the new ERP implementation in our 2024 budget. To be clear, given the resources we have, this means that we won’t be able to implement XYZ generative AI features until next year. Is that aligned with what you were thinking?”
Thank you very much!! Great advice
