It’s honestly wild how often the worst behavior gets rewarded at work. I see people who spend their whole day gossiping or throwing teammates under the bus, and somehow they’re the ones getting the promotions. Meanwhile, everyone else who actually works hard and treats people right just gets ignored. I used to think integrity was the most important thing, but I’m starting to get cynical. Is playing fair just a way to kill your own career when the office culture is this a mess?

I'm a relatively junior data engineer (2yoe), the only other engineer (senior) that trained me left about a 6 months ago and I negotiated a nice raise for the extra responsibilities.

My performance reviews have been stellar, but my manager is starting to look to hire a senior to help me deliver projects as we do lack capacity right now.

I feel like I might be missing an opportunity to ask for a promotion and hire a junior instead.
