Anyone made the transition from NYC to Austin?

I find myself asking why I am in NYC when everything is so damn expensive. Making good money, but limited on savings and quality of life due to the HCOL. Or recs for other cities for that matter.

Worked and lived in NYC for years. Austin is getting just as expensive if you want to live in the city. However you can find “LCOL” areas a bit further away from downtown. I live in northwest Austin and in a pretty central location and my expenses are 10% lower than they were when in NYC.

Only 10% even with the lower taxes?

I was in Austin, but left to go live somewhere else. Some things you need to know about living in Austin.

- While no doubt cheaper than NYC, it isn't the bargain it used to be. Anything in the city is going to be expensive and (with a drop in salary) you might actually find you have to live fairly far out of the city to make it affordable.

- Unless you are in the city, "walkability" isn't a thing in Austin (or Texas in general). You will need a car and can expect to drive pretty much everywhere. Public transportation is minimal.

- Texas is heavily controlled by the GOP and Austin, while often held out as a "liberal city," has been gerrymandered and heavily legislated by the state government (i.e. when the local government tries to pass more progressive laws, the state government steps in and overrides them).

- The summers are HOT. From June through September the night time temps don't drop below 80, and it can still be close to 100 well into October. Granted, the winter and spring in Austin are very nice. (Also, remember that the Texas power grid is ill equipped for severe weather.)

Austin is very boring and cost of living is high. I used to live there. Born and raised in HTX.

Got news that my house closing may have to be moved due to a delay in the sale of my home. My partner’s income was excluded in the DI ratio, but if it were included we’d be well under the % threshold and can be approved to close on time regardless of the sale of my house. However our mortgage company’s underwriting team has been painfully slow in confirming if her income qualifies. She’s been at her new job 1 month after a year off. Anyone with underwriting experience have insight?

Tell me your craziest experience working with a TV network. Here comes mine:

I'm American, but my family is mostly Colombian. I was told my aunt and cousins would come here for 2 weeks. I discovered they were going to be paid to appear in a famous Hispanic TV show, where a "judge" receives a case, hears the plaintiffs and defendants and renders a verdict. But of course, it's all fake and payed 😂 turns out she wanted me to go there (even though I don't work for that TV network) so she's sure she'll be paid at the end of the show. Wth did I just do.

Is this legal?
After being mugged and having my things (including my keys) stolen, I was locked out of my townhome after business hours on a weekend. I was told on the phone when dialing my complex’s after hours number (which is managed by a 3rd party company) that my complex’s policy would let me in for a cost of $100 (as it was after hours). After I was let in, property manager informed me the charge was $200. Is there anything I can do here? This is in Minnesota. Help appreciated!!

Quick question.
I was a contractor for a big company and they just let me know that my last day is December 30th. I got this position thanks to a recruiting company that has been great and gives me benefits.
Should I:
- Continue working with the recruiting company, hoping that they will find another position for me? (as they told me they will, and when they applied me I started working with my current company within 2 weeks)
- Work with the recruiter + apply for jobs on my own?

Any specific companies I should look into? (Preferably UK based, but open to most of EU)

If I get a referral from someone and I apply, then can I still reach out to a recruiter on LinkedIn expressing interest in the role? And do I let them know that I already applied? I’m sure they get tons of messages so I want to write something that won’t be overlooked. Any advice is appreciated:)

I am in a tech IC position. One of friends switched to FAANG by converting the profile to consultant profile. The friend who might have less tech knowledge than me is now in FAANG and earning more.
