I drove past the fast-food place today where I worked during school, and it brought back memories, some not so good. I remembered craving more hours to pay for school, but they’d send me home early on slow days to save costs. It felt unfair, especially after taking three buses and sacrificing sleep just to work. Going home early made it feel like I woke up for nothing. Why do restaurants do that? Let people work and earn. It’s minimum wage anyway.

Have you ever had your hours cut at work?

I’ve never experienced having my hours cut but I can imagine how it could feel. I’m sorry you had to experience that

I am glad you didn't have to because it is the worst thing.

Because they don't care about us. I used to offer to cover shifts for coworkers which would be approved by management. On many, many occasions, I would show up (5:30am!) just to be told "oh, we decided we didn't need this shift covered afterall, so you can go home."

That was outrageous. I mean you would wake up early and show up at work just to be told that they did not need you. I am sorry you had to go thru this.

All restaurants and retail cut when things are slow. It is crappy, but most of the time it’s not about you or what it takes for you to get there. I always try to offer it to people first, if there’s someone who wants to go home, but it also depends on the shifts, which is probably even more true in restaurants, where you have closers versus mids, etc.

You are right. There are always some people who want to leave early and it makes sense to offer that to them first. However, my job had a different way of working. They would pick one person each day to send them home does not matter if there is someone who wants to go.

I remember working in a restaurant when I was in high school. Those were definitely the good ol' days. I only made $2.15 an hour and barely ever made more than $10 a day in tips. I was working for basically nothing.

That is basically working for free. I mean if you survived that, you could survive anything. It atleast gave you some experience.

We’ve been attending a church for about 6 months now and trying to decide if it’s our church home. The only reason I’m hesitant is because people don’t seem to engage with us as much as I expected. For example, I told the pastors wife about a serious diagnosis we recently received and she did pray for us on the spot, but no one has reached out to us at all to check in. Am I expecting too much?
