Move overseas. That’s where all the jobs are being created in accounting
I would start networking and try to get referrals. The job market is so rough right now. Job referrals can truly make a big difference.
It's not a great job market, and it's hard to find something just by applying. If you have any business acquaintances, or contacts from school, who might know of something get in touch with them. The key to networking is to let people know you're looking for work. If someone you know doesn't know of any openings, they may steer you to someone who does. Work the phone, be texting, be emailing.
You described me right out of college. I also had lousy grades. I did non-accounting work for 2 years before getting hired by a very small local firm where I learned about accounting, improved my work ethic, and got some experience. After 2 years, I was able to get hired by a B4, but had to take a pay cut because my previous experience was enough to get me in, but as a first year staff. I was there for 14 years and now at a MM firm. Point is, be patient, be diligent about looking for the right opportunities, and if you’re having a hard time, getting any relevant experience helps. And if you’re serious, get your CPA exam done and don’t let comp get in the way. I took a low pay at the small firm, then a pay cut to join B4. Had to just get in the door first. But now I’m doing pretty well.
Do you meet credit or degree requirements to be CPA eligible? If so, indicate that. Having personal references is also important and helpful to have an edge in the recruiting process.
Decide if you are looking for a public or private/corporate accountant position.
What type of accounting specifically? If you want industry i would say start applying for open positions. If you want public accounting passing the CPA exams is big and networking where you can. Start with college alumni of your school and ask if they are willing to talk about their work. Most of us in the industry would be fine to talk about it.
You should study for the CPA exam.
If you are looking in the U.S., find a company that could use a person that speak your native language (for instance, because of their clientele base). It’s really difficult to obtain a professional position here without a certain level of communication skills in English.
