Yeah. People management is hard. There are a lot of mindset changes to navigate.
What’s your end goal? Do you want to improve or do you want to return to being an IC? Do you want to be an IC forever or do you eventually want to manage people again?
Thank you for being open about your journey. I’ve been excelling as an IC and have always wondered about climbing the ladder towards being a supervisor/manager. I feel like I would be in your same shoes 6 months in. Do keep us posted with how you navigate this. I hope you find what you’re looking for- whether accepting the challenge of people managing or finding another IC role that you would find more fulfilling
I’ve been at this crossroad for a while now. Next step up for me is people manager and I do not want it! Why invite the headache when I’m already paid the same. Since I’m at a manager pay in my job, director level is next for me and I just don’t want to explore this path. But I’m watching my colleagues move up in their career and know if I want to move up, I need to do the same. Ugh.
I would take up a coach offer or some kind of managerial training if you really want to give it a shot. When I was a new manager, I really struggled and told my boss that I needed help. I gave myself 1 year to take trainings, find peers who are in similar positions and mentors who could coach me. I’m so glad I did, I truly do enjoy being a manger now and will never go back to an IC role
That sounds amazing. I’m so glad you found your rhythm as a people manager. I need training and coaching for sure if I’m going to step into this role.
Hi!
Here’s what I´d do:
I would get clear on what I want: do I want to go “all in” and try to give my best to this managerial role or do I want to go back to being an IC.
It really comes down to making a decision and then reverse engineering it to what needs to be done for you to get <there>.
You have already proven yourself and experienced yourself in an IC role. You know what to expect and how to excel in it.
At the same time, being a manager is a new field. Can it be that it’s not that you “hate” it but aren’t skilled in it yet? (Just something to get curious about :)
At the same time, it is so very important for you to honour your true interests & strengths. If you discovered that managing people doesn’t align with you: what is the best course of action for you to take that will be of service to you, your future career aspirations and your people/company?
Wish you all the best!
Btw, if you’d like to chat further, feel free to message me/connect on LI. I´m a Career Coach, happy to offer some additional insights.
The first year really does suck!! It takes a lot of time to find your footing, and your leader “voice”.
