Is there anyone within your org that you can talk and network with that can help you get a leg up?
Underwriting?
I’ve been trying to get into underwriting and everyone I’ve spoken with so far from a recruiter and interviewer standpoint says I don’t have the right experience based on what lines they write or they are looking for someone with current UW experience. It’s been WILD. I also don’t think the folks interviewing me even understand what a CPCU or ARM is and that producers, if you do your job well, are supposed to be front line underwriters and not just sales jockeys.
I bet it's not that you're not qualifying for these positions but just that the competition is stiff and you're getting beat out by people with more experience. I would try to network and get some referrals. That's the only way you'll move past the people who have more experience than you.
Think about your skills and why they should hire you over somebody with more relevant experience. What are you bringing to the table that others aren't? It's all about getting in the mind of the recruiter and answering their questions with your résumé and cover letter before they even ask them.
I’ve been in the insurance business since the 80’s & come with my own P & C & Health license. With all my experience, nobody wants me. They want the young-ins, with no experience. They can’t afford to pay me with my extensive, professional, background! Not 1 infraction on my license! Whistling clean credentials, vetted & whistling clean drivers license!
