Why do you care about what he’s being billed out at? Is he being paid more?
It’s not unusual for different practice areas to have different rate structures.
Oh sorry, fair point. He joined my practice group despite having a different background. We do the same work.
I would be livid. This is definitely something that you should address with leadership. At a minimum you deserve an explanation for the disparity.
Rising Star
Same exact thing happened to me several years ago and I was furious. I went to the group leader and said “I noticed x has a higher rate than me, do you know why that might be?” I think I also said something along the lines of “wouldn’t that suggest his comp is higher too?” He said “that would make sense.” (I already knew from talking to the associate that he made $10k more). I ended up getting a discretionary bonus to make up for the discrepancy and our rates and comp were equalized the next year.
I wouldn’t go scorched earth. But I’d probably address it as “I noticed his rate is higher than mine despite x, y, z, maybe it’s time to consider raising my rate.” Then once your rate has been raised you can push for a comp increase.
Ask leadership. This is bad news if true.
