I really need help. I’ve applied to over 500 jobs and I finally got a job offer but it is commission only’ is it worth taking it? Because I could be working and make no money at all. I really need money right to cover rent and food

Do you feel at all confident in what you are supposed to sell? Do you have to spend any of your money to do this? First two questions I’d ask myself. Outside of that it might be worthwhile just in the meantime until you find something better. Personally not a fan of commision only, but know the job market is incredibly hard out there right now.

Honestly, if I didn’t have a job and needed one I would probably take it and then work my butt off to make sure that commission was going to be where I needed it to be. I would say in the meantime to keep looking because personally, I don’t love commission based roles because they tend to have a lot more stress associated with them but it doesn’t hurt to take it while you keep looking.

I would ask if there are any current accounts that you may inherit, whereas it could give you some incremental income to start. However, I’m not too inclined to take a sales position that is strictly commission based.

You're right to be very wary of that. You could be in a position of making money for the company but essentially losing money by working. If you absolutely need to try something to generate some income it might be worth trying. But if you have another choice available it would be best to avoid a commission only situation.

Commision based sales isn’t for everyone. It’s for people who are independent and no disrespect, self motivated. The people that do the best are the ones who are sick and tired of working hard for someone else and not only having no flexibility but barely getting by. I’ve done commission based sales for over ten years, I’ve made $40k and I’ve made $300k both times I earned my income.

Never work for straight commission unless they provide all of your prospects to close and you only present and close vetted prospects with interest. If not, the salary pays you for the marketing time you spend, and time is money. I don't do free advertising, such as a walking talking brochure and free marketing.
