I usually avoid talking politics with clients, but every so often one just won’t let it go. Part of me worries that if I change the subject, they’ll feel brushed off, but I also don’t want to lie about my views just to keep the peace. It’s a tricky balance… do you ever find yourself in that situation? How do you handle it without turning the meeting into a debate club?

Most political discussion these days comes down to taunting and the repetition of disinformation picked up from social media. I used to talk with people about politics, but that was when people were better informed. Now you have people who have honestly never read a newspaper spouting off on politics. If there's no common basis of fact you can't have a discussion, so it's best to just avoid it.

I couldn’t agree more - it feels less like a real discussion these days and more like people just talking past each other. Definitely not something I’d want to get into with clients.

Are they directly asking you about your political beliefs? Or just sharing their own? In the latter case, I’ve just gotten used to acknowledging their beliefs without validating or divulging my own. Just has been the best approach for me with clients

It’s more them sharing their own views, but I can’t help feeling like they’re really looking for me to echo them...

I hate talking politics as well. I will usually just give general answers or nod along. I try to walk that delicate line carefully.

I try to avoid this topic too, but it’s so frustrating when you get one who just won’t let it go and keeps coming back to it.

Confession: I used to have a F co-worker who had bad body odor (the raw type that can be masked with deodorant or good hygiene). Others including F co-workers were making fun of her behind her back. I knew she would take it some type of way coming from a M co-worker but I sent her an email about it to avoid any type of face to face awkwardness. Contd in comments...
