I was chatting with a friend about how fast finance is evolving, and it got me thinking what’s one sector in finance you think might disappear in the next 5–10 years? Could be due to tech, regulation, shifting habits, not just AI. For me, it’s traditional bank branches. With everything moving online and mobile, I can’t remember the last time I stepped into a physical bank. Curious what others think, is there a part of finance you think is on its way out?

I've got elderly relatives that are outraged over the loss of bank branches. To them, walking into a bank said something. And that makes sense, if you see photos of ornate bank lobbies from decades ago, they radiated a sense of security and stability. We do almost everything now from a phone app, and it's convenient, but I guess it must have been nice to think your money was safe and secure behind all the polished brass. I guess the trend I expect to continue is the phasing out of cash. I always carry some but almost never use it myself.

I kind of miss the luxury bank days, but I really can’t argue with the convenience of everything being on my smartphone

They're talking about getting rid of the penny aren't they? Lol I wonder if cash/change will be gone altogether in the next 10 years? I hope not, personally. I still like to use cash as a budgeting hack, but idk maybe it's not worth spending federal money on.

That is a good point. Even on the rare occasion I do need to get cash money out, I just stop at whatever ATM is closest and pay a couple bucks to withdraw. I think planning/advising will decrease a lot. AI and programs will spit out the best-case scenarios. The real people in that will only exist for the elite few.

I hate to say it, but I see fund managers going out eventually because of AI

I agree with you on the banks. I don't have a branch of my bank in my city, nor in any surrounding cities. If I need cash, I go to an ATM, but that's like… Twice a year. I'm not sure how much longer they will justify brick-and-mortar banks at this rate.
