(Cont.) and in the effort to take a stand on the issue of abortion, takes what I objectively think is a stand that’s not aligned with Christian values on a multitude of other issues.
I didn’t grow up in the US, and in my home country I feel like Catholics are treated with respect because there is some consistency in the value system we were known to stand for. For example - It would be unthinkable for Catholics to - as a group - affiliate themselves with a pro death penalty stand, a pro gun stand.. and those are just on the topic of the dignity of life. There’s social justice issues, economic issues..
It’s reached a point where I don’t want to be associated with the church and what it has chosen to stand for. That’s a huge deal for me because it has such a strong part of my identity, it is my home. It has been in very literal ways my refuge and anchor. Moreover, I wouldn’t really know where else to go!
I don’t know what I truly expect from sharing this. I guess I’m wondering if there’s others who have been in this boat, and how they navigated it.
As far as acceptance, what gets lost a lot in discussions is change. When Jesus did not let anyone stone the prostitute, I don't think he supported or "accepted" her lifestyle in the sense of being OK with it. In fact he said I do not condemn you since no one else did, but go and "sin no more". The "let's accept all sinners" makes sense because we are all sinners and if Jesus accepts us who are we to judge or reject anyone as his church? But it usually just stops there. The "sin no more" part seems to be lost or not even mentioned at all. Yes we should not discriminate against lgbt, yes we should accept them back into the church, however, it is still a sin and the hope would be not to condone their current lifestyle or be OK withit , but to hope for a change (although not sure how this would happen in this particular context or if it's even possible, but thats another debate).
