Trying to laterally move to another in house position. At my current company, Counsel is a Manager level position while Senior Counsel is a Director level and General Counsel is Senior Director. Would like to find if Counsel is a Director role at other companies.

Titles are not going to be consistent across companies, but at my corp counsel/senior counsel are non-director roles. I would guess this would be equivalent of manager / sr. manager at most places. The next step up (managing counsel) is director level and above that (AGC/GC) are VP and SVP.

like

I don’t think so; being a “manager” I think has some kind of technical HR purpose but when it comes to salary/bonus legal is in a different framework.

At my company we are all just Counsel until at least 10 years to Senior Counsel. Only a handful are above Senior Counsel as Managing Counsel (obviously management role).

like

At my two in-house gigs, counsel was equivalent with manager. Senior counsel was equivalent with a director role. It’s sometimes hard to equate, but you can compare pay bands and years of experience in the job postings to sometimes discern the equivalencies. Good luck!

like

Thank you! Presently at my current company, manager bonuses are low and set pretty low and it’s impossible to change bonus structure at counsel level no matter years of exp so just trying to see if structure is vastly different at other places!

Do NOT claim you are "colorblind" in the workplace. 1. DE&I knowledge is now a core leadership competency. Colorblind claims will earn you the reputation of being DEI-ignorant at best & racist at worst. 2. Colorblindness within the context of workplace diversity is an obvious lie. You do NOT want to be painted as an intellectually dishonest leader. 3. Colorblind claims signal that you lack the leadership skills & vocabulary to have key conversations. Looking for some perspective in negotiations.

2nd year at midsize firm making 150k with 1700 billable hour requirement.

Got an in house offer at global company for 130k, $5000 signing bonus. They know I make 150k.

I am currently at a firm and received an in-house offer. Aside from main items like comp and big ticket benefits like PTO/health insurance/401k, what other items do I need to think about discussing/negotiating? At first, the hiring manager and head of legal were very complementary about my experience. Almost too much so. After a week of interviews with the team (softball-esq), I was informed that if I wanted to join, they would bring me on at a lower title. I’m not sure about comp yet.
