California cost of living is brutal. $200k in the Philly area could be doable. Especially if you send your kids to public school, which that guy probably does.
Doable with one income for the family that is. Could be cushy living with a spouse that has a similar salary or anything over $100k.

It requires a bachelor’s in education, teaching experience, a graduate degree in ed or public administration, and frequently a PhD as well.
Your job will then be to manage thousands of employees at dozens of schools, caring for tens- if not hundreds of thousands of students, while administering funding from the legislature and navigating the respective politics.
Any comparable job in the private sector, especially in HCOL state like CA, would pay a multiple of what he receives in his job now.
