Years ago I would work on holidays as we'd get overtime pay, and that was helpful. In recent years I've managed to avoid it. I'd rather spend the time enjoying a holiday like everyone else. Perhaps I just aged out of being aggressive about racking up overtime.

Here is the thing- there is time for everything and nothing seems likable all the time. I guess I am going thru the time where I prefer earning some bucks. But I know the time is not too far where I would prefer not to work either on stats and rather enjoy my time with my kids.
Does management try to save money for corporate? Only if they want to stay employed.
You have NO IDEA how much pressure is put on store management, especially when it comes to payroll and labour. I have been yelled at for having high turnover (even when they send me in to clean up a problem store). I have been yelled at for having low turnover (too many people around long enough to increase payroll over average).
I'm a firm believer in that you have to staff for the sales you want, not the sales you have. If everyone is running flat our, and customers are being ignored, you will NEVER increase sales and get the full potential out of a store. Especially when companies are striving for less than 10% payroll costs.
It gets to the point where sales go down, so labour is cut, which leads to further declining sales. When you get to that point, it is definitely time to cut and run.
They sure do! They scrimp wherever they can. We are working under horrible conditions at the moment, so extremely understaffed.

Yeah thats right. A lot of companies want to be understaffed just to save money but it is their employees who have to overwork to keep up with goals.
