Awards are all a bit of a scam. So take any rankings with a pinch of salt. I think clients feel the same but still love to have their egos massaged at Cannes.
I do it and it is indeed gross. However, since I was on the wrong side of a layoff I’m going to do whatever I can to drum up attention and opportunities for myself. But I also don’t blame people for cringing at it either.
This seems the smart approach. I’m pretty old for this industry and pretty sure the only reason I’ve survived multiple rounds of layoffs is that I consistently win awards. (They also help enormously when it comes to changing jobs/ negotiating a pay rise.) The idea of bragging about them, however, is mortifying.
They rank CD’s?!
Ah ok I’ve never been able to get work in there
I know the number #1 CD. He’s super nice. His business is awards. But he’s super talented too. If he was a dick, I’d be with you there.
And of course, there are really gross displays of award wins on social causes. Maybe they can be justified as promoting the work. But it comes off poorly.
There’s only one true #1 CD brothers… have you heard the good news?
Last year Mike Sutherland and Ant Nelson won Creative Directors of the Year (AdAge). I'm not so sure about other outlets ranking CDs for submitted work because most clients won't allow submission (at least in my experience). Bragging is such a turn-off...especially exaggerated bragging.

Reading your post about it is the most attention I’ve given to this type of shit in like, forever
Yeah, at the end of the day, we know that there is oly one #1 CD in the industry. Maybe they are the #1 CD in their industry but we can all see right through the smoke in the mirror.
It’s a bit like those “Best place to work” awards that come up all the time despite nobody ever knowing any employee who was ever asked their opinion on the matter.
