10/week is nowhere close to overkill. Out of those 40, you'd be incredibly lucky to get 5 interviews. You should have no problem keeping tabs on things.

That's a perfectly reasonable number of applications to be submitting. There are people who boast of applying for hundreds of jobs, but that kind of "spam applying" seems like it couldn't work. Probably no need to worry about following up with companies, you'll either hear from them or not. In most cases, if they don't invite you for an interview they simply don't want to hear from you.
