I’ve seen it in small boutiques, but after the consolidations of the 1990s and early 2000s we saw larger shops become younger as older middle managers were culled from the ranks as part of cost savings efforts — these people had better salaries and relatively low billings. Those of us who survived this blood letting will remember the craziness. At Grey, I was asked as a director to have a 100% utilization rate, which is impossible for a manager without defrauding clients. Some of this came from the breakdown of media fees from their historic 15% or their full abstraction into the new media agencies. This money has historically paid for the overhead of middle management and then some — but were negotiated away by large clients looking for consolidated. It was a shame since so many agencies lost so many good people who historically would have become the knowledge keepers and mentors for the next generations — short term savings for clients and agencies with long term costs. Mix in the cult of youth in Hollywood and Silicon Valley and you have the recipe for heavy age bias in the industry against even a dusting of gray hair.

Happy to talk more substance if you ever wanna connect IRL. Probably calling yourself "old" has more going on there, too. Plus, accepting aging while also not letting it define you is a struggle I can certainly relate to. Not leading with that in both our heads and externally is hard but I believe can affect perception greatly... ✊
