I'm really lucky because my current job actually promised competitive salaries and flexible hours and actually delivered! I keep waiting to hear that it's all just a joke, but it's actually as good as they said. Tons of opportunities for overtime and lots of flexibility for parents and people who need the time off. I hope everybody's able to find a job like that.

That’s fantastic to hear! It’s refreshing to find a job that truly delivers on promises.
The word competitive doesn't have a lot of meaning in those contexts, which is something I've come to learn. At my previous job I heard the classic line "you'll wear many hats," and I fell for that. It meant any random job was pushed onto my plate and I was glad to leave that job behind me.

You’re spot on! Competitive can often be vague, and I’ve seen the wear many hats line too it's usually code for extra work. Glad you found a better fit!

Oh yeah, the “competitive salary” line is the biggest red flag in job-ad history. It’s right up there with “fast-paced environment” (translation: chaos) and “wear many hats” (translation: we can’t afford to hire enough people). My personal favorite/worst was a role a few years back where the ad said “highly competitive compensation” and “great work-life balance.” I got through the process, offer comes in… and it was literally $8k less than what I was already making, with a vague promise of “significant bonus potential.” When I pushed back and asked for the target bonus numbers, they said “it varies, but top performers can earn up to 15%.” Top performers. For a role that was already senior-level. I laughed out loud on the call (politely, but still).

It’s surprising how often highly competitive means less than expected. It’s good you stood your ground!
