It’s really important to figure out what your plan is for these situations—it gets better as kids get older (and sick less often), but it still happens. I stayed at my firm, and I think it’s easier because my schedule is more “flexible,” unless I’m right in the middle of a deal. My husband is the one who stays home if I can’t do it. I always worried that if I went in house, I’d lose what flexibility I have.

I’m in litigation and have stayed at a firm. I have two kids with the youngest over 4 and all I can say is it gets easier and the mass sicknesses lessen. It helps to have a husband with a flexible job. He does almost all drop off/pick up from daycare and school. I’ve been left with sick kids when he’s out of town but at these ages, the kids just watch tablets and I can get a full day of work done. I agree with P1 that there is more flexibility at a firm in some ways. I personally don’t want to ever have to ask someone for approval to use PTO. But getting through the infant years is nearly impossible. It takes a lot of strength to get through, especially if you pump. I still can’t believe I am still here sometimes, so I get how you feel! I am definitely not having a third, I don’t see how that is humanly possible without a stay at home husband.
