In this world, so may people apply for the same job that I’m sure they had others willing take the lower pay, so they don’t have to negotiate with other people
When a job posting gets hundreds (or thousands) of applications, it's easy to think companies just pick the person who's happy to take whatever they throw out there, no haggling required. And honestly, in this market right now that dynamic does play out sometimes.
Employers know they've got a big pool, so they might start with lower offers or tighter ranges, betting someone will bite without pushing back especially if folks are desperate, underemployed, or just burned out from the search.
It'd be nice if they did make a counter and at least give her the option to accept or reject it. But NCM1 is right. They don't have to bother when there are thousands of people applying for every single role that gets posted.
It's frustrating as hell when you know a simple counteroffer could make all the difference for someone but companies just don't bother. With the flood of applications right now in early 2026, they've got zero incentive to negotiate if they can grab someone who's fine with the posted range or even lower.
If the range we have available doesn't match what the candidate is looking for, we make an offer anyway. Most candidates understand that it is not to offend them, we simply have a budget to work within. Candidates will accept anyway, and that is becoming more common because of the job market.
A counteroffer might show they're interested, but sticking to expectations is respectful too.
