I tell them that I will not play a role in worsening their current medical issues or facilitate their premature death or put my license on the line. I make it clear that I will not be bullied into prescribing controlled substances and that they are free to find another doctor.
I agree, I tell them this also. I tell them you have rights but so do I. I have been threatened several times by patients if I did not Rx these meds. I did not back down. I doubled down.
I agree with above statement.
Many states have controlled substance websites. We are required to check site before prescribing. I review my patient's info with patient to ascertain how high doses, how long, and other controlled substances. Emergency dept records can help with any cardiac complaints and/or urine drug screens. Good luck
Stand your ground, don't cave. You know what is right. I agree with you. I went through the same thing when I did outpatient care, taking over panels of other providers that moved on. Same thing for chronic pain meds and anxiolytics for an inappropriate population. I would tell them, instead of us fighting and spending the entire time talking about these meds, I am going to send you to a specialist who can decide and the 2 of you can discuss it. That usually would make them happy and take me out of the equation. If they had issues with the controlled substances I sent them back to whoever Rx them. There is no reason to be held hostage by these people. If they that pushy, they could also be selling them.
