I would imagine that everyone, in this case, is probably referring to the creative team. I also might imagine there's a reason you feel like you've been 'targeted'....😬
The irony for me is the "please do better" sign off, haha. Maybe I'll use that in my next internal review. 😅😇
You aren't wrong. But the internet is where people come to complain... It is what it is. And to be fair to the OP, while generalizing, they aren't really wrong as most of us can attest.
All that to say - keep changing the narrative on your own team so the next generation also understands how to give and take direction. Aaannnd so that the next hot take doesn't come from your crew, haha.
Nah they’re totally right and I count myself a part of everyone. Most creatives I know do as well.
Bowl Leader
I agree with them. Had the worst ECD who’d do this. Once he briefed us on Friday night for a client meeting Monday. So he asked for the work to be sent to him on Sunday morning for review then waited til Sunday night to tell us “you’re not there yet”. Cut to now, and he’s “looking for work” with all our ads in his portfolio.
Bowl Leader
I felt comfortable politely disagreeing and stating my case but he would just dig his heals in. A good leader, heck even a good person, should know when they’re disrespecting your time and effort by delaying feedback and then giving what amounts to none.
The best CDs aren’t just curators, they should make the work better. I sit with teams for as long as it takes to find ideas in their rough thoughts and make them great.
Yeah, “keep going” sucks. Especially when there’s a lack of concrete, tangible and actionable feedback to provide some necessary direction and context. That said, as someone who has spent a good bit of time reviewing others ideas, sometimes “keep going” is the polite way of saying this was a very weak round of work and you can do better. Which is something, when said out loud, can be a lot worse for morale than an occasional piece of vague feedback. It’s ok to have a bad round of work. No one hits a home run every time. If someone is obviously being lazy I’ll call them out on it. If it’s just an odd poor round usually I’ll say go back to the brief. And “keep going.”
With all due respect, if you’ve been in the industry long enough to rise to ecd, you’ve been in it long enough to learn how to deliver tough feedback without hurting feelings. If the work is going enough, it’s on you to explain why. Keep going is never helpful and it says more about the person giving the feedback than it does the people receiving it.
