Hi All,

I recently obtained my law degree and currently work for a BigLaw law firm as an assistant. I want to make the transition to the firm’s Litigation department because I want to practice international arbitration. How do I approach my HR department as well as the litigation bosses about transitioning to litigation? Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks

If you are in big law, it’s not going to happen via HR. You might need to build connections there and then get experience in house elsewhere. Maintain your network from the firm and come back as an attorney in a year or two.

You can always blaze your own path but getting the opportunity to show that you can do the work might be hard. If you can turn your assignments into opportunity and build up the experience then you can have a partner be your sponsor and help you make that transition. Don’t be shy about sharing your goal with partners and senior associates.

Get to know the partners you would want to work with, indicate your qualifications, see if there’s a desire/need. Then get in touch with HR. Alternatively, I email HR about transitioning your role and any internal application process.

Thanks… I definitely want to do IA but I’m also liking products liability as well. I think that it’s a great area especially with what’s going on.

Hi everyone. I'm pretty early in my career (just over 1 YOE) & not really enjoying my current role as a Consultant/Developer because of the type of projects I get combined with some mobility issues. However, I'm really interested in technical program management or project management and I'm looking for any advice on how to get there bc I've been applying, but can't even seem to get a call back.

At what point does the value of a degree fall off? I'm in my early 30s, and have five years of experience, and work on a very theoretically interesting project. I believe I'm on track to promotion in the next year. So, I could put in a year of full time school to check the box off, but I'd be sacrificing hobbies and social life (not to mention cost). Is this FOMO or is there real opportunity here?
