Some of the partners I work with are very difficult. Condescending, rude, non responsive, belittling, etc. I am looking to leave, but scared of ending up in a worse place. Could use some words of encouragement from anyone who was in my position.

I had to lateral twice before I found a place that I found fulfilling and treated me with dignity. I’m still in big law and the partners I work with are very supportive, kind, and patient, but they still expect hard work. I’ve never been happier. You deserve better and will find it.

^ Seconding this. It helps if you have a friend or trustworthy acquaintance who can vouch for the group you’re moving to. I’m so much happier now, and I’m still in big law.

You have to learn to recognize red flags of low self esteem in other people and vet until you're sure they're safe people.

I highly recommend the books dangerous personalities and the six pillars of self-esteem. Be brutally honest with yourself as to whether this person is showing you red flags in the interview. Bravado is a sure fire sign they're unwell.

like

The way that I developed an aptitude for recognizing red flags is by always asking myself why someone is saying something, not focusing on what they say, but what effect they desired to have either on themselves, internally, or others around them. Then starting to build up pattern recognition from what you saw when you met them and your later outcomes.

But I think those books could help you connect the seemingly benign things people say and do to underlying personality disorders and self-esteem issues faster.

It’s very difficult but you must not take it personally. Focus on what you need to do and let it roll off you like a duck. Depending upon the person, professionally confront.

like

In order not to take it personally, try to take distance and separate the opinion or comment from who you are as a person. Everyone makes mistakes and an isolated event doesn’t say anything about you as a person or as a professional. Sometimes, people are just projecting their own fear and loathsome unto other people. It has nothing to do with you, they just need therapy but don’t have the agency and awareness to go get help. That being said, take steps to make damage control and learn skills, techniques or tactics to respond quickly, wittily and professionally.
Look for advise on tik tok there are people teaching you to defend yourself and set boundaries when you are confronting a professional bully.

Been there. Heavily vet and make the jump. The fish that stayed in the pot was boiled.

I work in family law litigation, and I’ve seen judges abuse litigants and attorneys. Litigants walk in and the Judge berates them for being overdramatic and pushes a settlement. Meanwhile, the Judge is the one being dramatic on the bench. This profession is full of these toxic personalities.

like

I’ve seen this too, even where a couple of judges literally look down on you, staring with their glasses about to fall from their faces - just because you started your discussion in a pre-conference hearing with “Good Morning, Your Honor!” This meant that the rest of your argument would likely be scrutinized.

It’s interesting, because in two of several instances where I was present in court to witness this, right before my cases were called, a couple of attorneys shared some warnings about these particular judges and their attitudes. We’re talking about two different courtrooms in two different towns - with two judges acting in similar ways. In situations like this, I try to remain pleasant but serious.

Hi Everyone, I’m looking for advice. Right now I’m currently facing a hard decision. I’ve been at my work for 5 months as an HR assistant and have been given the opportunity to take on the Executive Assistant role. I’m in my early 20’s and still unsure what career path I want to take. I know I want to keep moving up and doing more but again, not sure where I want to be. I’d appreciate your thoughts and advice from your experiences along with pros/cons on either position. Anything would help!
