Join the “private sector”. The writer, journalist and editor is undervalued yet provides all that is valuable.
Because of labor market supply/demand combined with the economics of the business. It's the same reason ad/pr agencies can pay peanuts. There's a thousand applicants for any open role and people are willing to work for peanuts. On the other side, the news business isn't doing particularly well, so there isn't a ton of $ to go around.
Compare to eg Investment Banking or Strategy Consulting, you've got same 1000:1 applicant:hire ratio, but the business economics are much better so they can afford to hire "the best talent" and pay them very well.
Newspaper jobs have ALWAYS been below average. People go to school and select JOURNALISM as their major - get their degree, and hope for a job. When I was young and dumb, I contacted every newspaper within 20 miles for a job. I scored a job and in my interview, I asked what the salary was. It was a dollar less than I could make as a grocery store clerk. When I questioned the boss, he said "Son, this is a glamor job - There are 30 resumes on my desk looking for this job. The only reason I'm offering you this job is because you worked here as a PAPERBOY for 3 years and everyone likes you." AND I had a masters in Communications Arts. Long story short, I worked as a cub reporter for 2 years, quit, went into cablecast, 10 years later (after I made a pot load of money) I started my own local newspaper and have done that for the past 25 years. I can only recommend
that you GO FOR THE GOLD! Then you can decide if you really want perceived glamor over money.
From what I understand , none of the media outlets are paying well these days. The pandemic hit advertising revenues pretty hard since no one was going out and they’re still recovering. It’s worse in radio than television. They’ve been slashing and/or freezing wages or cutting jobs for several years now.
