I think that in the early stages, it’s better to focus on building your portfolio rather than trying to make money right away. In general, it’s very important to keep learning, gaining skills from colleagues, exchanging experiences, and building up your expertise. You could also try to find another job and hire an assistant from a country where the cost of living is lower than in the U.S., which would allow you to delegate some project tasks and complete them faster. Of course, you’d be giving up part of your income to pay outside contractors, but you’d be developing your portfolio — even if it’s in co-authorship.
I once read about a guy in the IT field who managed to get 15–20 jobs at the same time. He collected orders while specialists from Pakistan and India did most of the work for him. But in the beginning, when he came up with the idea, he did part of the work himself. At his peak, his income reached $1 million a year. That’s definitely an extreme case, but the principle makes sense.
