We don't tell staff not to talk about their salaries. That's not legal. If you see inequity in your company's internal data, that's not something you should keep to yourself. Send that up the chain to investigate.
I agree with you and have been saying this for years. Companies don't want you to talk about salary because they don't want you to know you are being underpaid. I think transparency is the way that it should be.
The hush-hush around pay only benefits the employer. Transparency helps close gaps and builds trust. Keeping people in the dark is outdated.

It’s a privacy thing with knowing people’s wages I think as it’s something I’d never ask someone unless I felt like I could , but in my last job a couple of us were really close and we shared what we were all on and realised we were getting underpaid so we were so glad we over shared!
That happened in my last job too! The moment we compared notes, everything clicked. Privacy is valid, but secrecy is a different beast
