I really don't see any difference between feeling valued or needed in a workplace setting. It's a job, I don't expect emotional support from it. If we were talking about family relations, or friendships, I'd see it differently. But to me, being necessary at work is the same as being valued, it's simply a transactional relationship.
I believe that in a company, feeling valued starts with the employee’s manager. To me, it’s the manager acknowledging the value of the work being done and that doesn’t always need to be with pay.
It’s more engagement and culture than pay. Pay is still important, I won’t diminish that - you need to make sure folks are still reasonably happy with their comp.
But honestly, it shows a disconnect from culture. But it’s probably small things like recognition, remembering their birthday, work anniversary, etc. these are small engagement pieces that make people feel more than just “Employee 2174”.
Managers can also make all the difference, by coaching and recognizing employees so they do feel valued and seen. A lot of it’s is really just “Hey, thanks for doing that. Awesome job - appreciate you!, etc.)”
They’re low cost but high impact.

I agree with this. I have found it is often the small, consistent things that make the biggest difference in how valued someone feels day to day.
