You should get worried in like summer of next year if you still don’t have work. A lot of people don’t get fully ramped up until March - May
This seems to be every other post these days. Not meant to be snarky - take heart in the fact that many stub years are dealing with the same thing
Stub year hours don’t matter. Don’t stress
I don’t think you need to worry unless you don’t see it start picking up in the first few months of next year and other people are busy. Though you should continue to ask for work and even if you don’t want to change practice groups, be willing to work on matters outside your group if that is what’s available (also maybe pro bono).
Not unusual to be slow as a stub but usually a good idea to show you were actively trying to get work and finding ways to contribute.
I billed less than 100 hours my first 5 months at the firm and I’m still hitting my billables for the year. Don’t stress about how long the ramp up time is, enjoy it before it does ramp up.
Also a stub year, just curious how low of hours you are talking?

There’s no way I was anywhere near 100 billable hours during my stub year. Hell I was below 100 total hours for 2 months of this year and I am a 4th year. Definitely recommend pro bono to keep you busy & build skills. You’ll also get the chance to work with more senior attorneys who may then think of you for their next billable matter
In this economic climate, getting hours in any group would be beneficial. Be as helpful as you can.
Nobody will care.
What you should be thinking about now is how to set yourself up for next year’s hours target. Even if it means there is very little to do this month (though something is better than nothing), just line yourself with matters to work on and hit the ground running.
A matter I was on in late December during my stub period led to two additional matters with that same client which accounted for a substantial number of billable hours.
