I don't agree with Oscar Wilde.

But I do say, when it comes to marriage: "Men wait for the right time. Women wait for the right man."

I disagree with this. Too many women get married to the wrong man because they feel pressure to be married by a certain age

marriage benefits men far more than it benefits women; married men face lower rates of depression, better cognitive function, improved physical health, and greater longevity compared to unmarried men,

There are surely benefits to women too. Given the huge burden of bearing and raising children (especially nursing in early years which is biologically easier for women to lead on) creating a legal construct where a man owes you half of everything he ever earned if he tries to abandon you is quite good for women, right?

What’s the alternative? Given my understanding of the human lifecycle, women are the ones who need to spend years being pregnant and breastfeeding if we want to avoid extinction. That being the case, they can either a) marry a guy who either supports her or gives half his stuff or b) let men run merrily away with no obligation at all to the mother. Seems a pretty good deal tbh.

All the other stuff about mental load and doing more than their fair share of the chores is a comment on men being lazy not the specific construct of marriage. Married or not, if your man sucks then that will make you less happy.

Would change “curious” to “hopeful”

Not sure Oscar Wilde knew much about a happy marriage between men and women😂

Men marry bc they need a mommy to take care of everything and women marry because they see potential *
