Timing is everything! Negotiating your salary is after the formal offer, requesting a raise is after a period of time on the job, and pursuing a promotion is after building experience and knowledge.

How do you plan the timing? Clearly, some take more time than the others, but is it a gut feeling or suggestion from someone? And when is it bad timing?

I go a lot by what I’m seeing happening at the company already. If there are annual reviews, that is where a lot of those talks will happen. If not, I have to take more initiative to have them, and at least understand how I could get a raise. Bad timing shouldn’t really exist if you are being reasonable with it. Think that would be more of a bad company issue.

100%! Also, understanding how your manager operates will be a huge help in knowing how to go about it.

I try not to think about it too much and just bring it up when it feels natural. If I overanalyze it before talking to my boss, I will psych myself out and never bring it up.

Or your manager may misinterpret your intentions. Stay confident!
