The change in parenting styles, which has led to students being unprepared to learn in the group environment… me instead of we mentality… it is hard to teach kids how to wait, think of others, delay gratification, problem solving, and perseverance they need to participate in school learning activities when they haven’t learned or practiced these things at home as part of their everyday life. Schools aren’t set up for the individualization that kids and families expect. Teachers can’t keep up with level of individual needs and therefore struggle to help kids learn the academics. It feels impossible.
Nailed it
I think it is the over use of technology which has resulted in lower basic math skills and reading comprehension. When there are no textbooks and everything is online the door to cheating and plagiarism is wide open.
Students will not gain needed skills if they Google everything or use cheat sites for math.
Poor leadership at all levels. Look at the examples. We have parents that want to be friends with their kids, don’t want to do the hard work of parenting and are so stressed by their own lives that they want teachers to do all the “education stuff” at school so they can shift the guilt and blame when the child is not successful (despite the lack of learning readiness or lack of support from home). We have principals who won’t back teachers because they don’t have the support needed to support their teachers. Superintendents who don’t back their principals because our volatile political climate has attracted unqualified and misinformed people to school board positions. Politicians who spread misinformation to stir up their political base to keep getting elected so they can fight along party lines and do the biding of their corporate overload to stay in power rather than compromising to do what is in the best interest of this country ie: doing their jobs. Judicial systems that have stopped defending the constitutions and started making law through decisions based on their own political agendas. Executive branches of the governments from mayors to the White House using their “limited powers” to bypass the legislative process because they are so focused on what they demand they’ve become as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum.
The lack of leaders willing to acknowledge what is needed, let alone, follow through on policies and support that would make a positive impact is killing public education (which, I think, is the real agenda of certain political interest groups). Worse, they don’t really want to make education better. Education is a hot button when campaigning. It’s cheaper and easier to blame the teachers. This blame, lack of funding, and lack of support are driving even the best educators out of education or worse, burning them out and beating them into mediocrity ( how long can you really fight a never ending shit storm).
We desperately need term limits at all levels. Career politicians do not work for the people, they work for themselves. An ignorant populace is much easier to control than an educated one.
I agree with lack of support and the deterioration of parents parenting. It’s so sad how no one is held accountable anymore. People are losing internet in trying hard because it does not get them ahead. It gets them more work for the same pay. Lack of funding is the only thing I disagree with. We spend more than anywhere in the world the money just isn’t being used wisely.
Behaviors
Accountability! At every level and school.Hiw can we hold the kids accountable when the adults have none?! And professionalism.....gone!
Look around.....many teachers are in a disrespected profession. Thus same teachers are just tying a bigger knot just to hang on......and why there is a teacher shortage.
