That is totally insane. 1:2 partners per associate is closer to normal/average.

Oh wow yes I misread. Hahah. 1 partner to 4 associates is normal. Not the other way around.

Last firm was 7 partner to 1 associate and it was a bloodbath. Other firm was 2 partners to 2 associates and it was equally a mess. I think 1 partner to 2 associates is not a bad mix.
Your firm is top-heavy. Even if you make partner, unless you have a substantive client base, your distributions will be smaller.
I don’t think yours is normal, but neither is mine. We have 1:1 ratio and associates are drowning
Literally had the same realization about my firm about a month ago. I kept wondering why I was never staffed with other associates on cases and it was always me and a team of partners on each case. Googled the ratio and was like ohhhhhhhhh.
Last firm I worked with was 1 partner to ever 6 or 7 associates
Both firms I’ve been in about 1 partner to 3-4 associates
Your ratio is similar to what it is at my firm. On the negative side, associates are spread thin but on the plus side there’s a good chance of making partner.
At my firm that doesn’t happen because once you become a mid-level they start giving you indications during your annual review of whether you’re “on track” to make partner. People who aren’t on track multiple years in a row get sort of nudged/encouraged to leave. It’s never a surprise. Does your firm do something similar?
Ours is 1 partner to 2-3 associates, and it’s not bad at all.
