Active listening + empathy in a leader. I didn’t realize how inspirational that’d be for me even years later.
It’s almost like when you’re a kid and you have a teacher who was an amazing mentor - just for adults in their career.

@Manager 1-You are absolutely right. We all have the ability to make an impact, and it is as simple as the way you communicate. Small gestures go a long way and can make all the difference.
I had a boss early on who was always quite encouraging and he tended to take what people said seriously. I just accepted that as normal, and it wasn't until later that I realized that's not always the case. I have a manager now who seems wired to be dismissive of people, no matter what they might have to say. It's especially frustrating as I know things don't have to be that way.

I agree with you 100%. When you consider what the primary duties of being a Manager are, they should be people oriented and have great communication and active listening skills. I'm often dumbfounded and question how the lack of those qualities exist in a few I've seen over my professional career.
After being in a leadership position for over 10 years, my first question is coming from curious, why would I be defensive if you ask me a question?
Now here’s the one caveat I can think of if you’ve asked me that same question 16 times, I’m going to be defensive. And I’ve had that happen before I shut it down really quickly, but I did it in a learning way for my employee.
And she told me straight up she hated working for me, but she became a better employee because of it.
For me, it is a recruiter that actually gets back to you. I've noticed when a recruiter doesn't have good communication, it is usually a sign of a bigger problem. It really is a green flag to have good communication.
