I’m 32 and earn $350k; wife is SAHM to 3 kids. I drive a 2023 Honda Passport and she drives a 2025 Honda Odyssey Touring. I’m a long way away from fun cars.
Sounds like you have nobler priorities than us DINKs. You will get there!
Honestly my first fun car was the first car I bought at 16, an 89 nissan 240sx with a modded sr20det. Was a $3000 rust bucket, but man it was quick. I didn't get my first boring "practical" car until I was 23 and preparing for moving halfway across the country I got a newer AWD camry just so I knew I could always make it home if an emergency happened.
But honestly man, if youre income is that high, go ahead and treat yourself to something fun, doesn't have to be a 200K German car, you'll have plenty of fun and memorable date nights in a 10-15K classic. Think Foxbody mustang, classic pickups etc. Even a C5 corvette should be well within your reach of buying outright.
What's your idea of fun car? I got my first fun car at 25, a higher mileage 3000gt
Honestly great question -- probably something responsive, good handling, enough hp to accelerate when I need it to. Sporty roadster is close to what I'm thinking.
Is this a second car or a primary? You need a backseat? 4 doors? Manual? Convertible? Do you want f u amounts of horsepower or a driver’s car?
If 4 door is a requirement, I would suggest Pontiac G8, or cadillac CTSV as great reliable options.
I bought my first fun car in my late 20s -- '22 Supra. I was making 200k+ w/o debt so the 55k wasnt a huge splurge. Still drive it all the time (although have sunk a ton of money into mods and track events).
Go for it. If you dont have kids then get a 2 seater-- may as well only have 2 seats while you can. Enjoy!
First fun can was my first car that ran, 1996 240sx set up for national level autox I bought at 18, had an 89 240sx at 17 but I never ran. Even when I didn’t have a “fun” car I made sure it was fun enough. 2001 ford expedition on 35s that would do burnouts for days and slide with the best of them. 2017 Audi s3 now. 4 kids and 40 years old
