As someone who was a consultant, that now uses consultants…basically every firm delivers the same quality of work just in a different color scheme

Some firms just charge way more for their colors.
Wow that’s crazy lol. Can’t believe he had KPMG below McKinsey

Well that's the point of the story, they clearly aren't educated about how much more superior we are
I told someone I’m a consultant and they replied “oh my son is a music consultant for our school district’s middle school” haha
Omg yes. I would always get examples like this!
Your friends are not making hiring decisions for MBB or T2 alums.
Ask any CXO and they’ll know the difference. The people hiring for exit opportunities at the post MBA level are very much aware of the difference in scope of work and typical clients level we all have.
Thinking back on all my projects over the last many years, all have been with C-suite or one layer below. Only one was two layers below the CEO and that is a massive massive company.
In general hiring managers for most jobs that MBB consultants want, will know what who/what MBB is.

One of my all-time favorite activities was going to the bars with my friends and watching how flustered they would get when they realized that the girl they were trying to hit on could not have cared less, or didn’t know who McK/Bain was. 10/10 activity.

Folks in these bowls will insist they or their friends get laid simply for working at these firms, like it’s the mad men era or something. I always suspected that was mostly fantasy or “heard from a friend of a friend” but it’s amusing to hear this failing in real time.
Your friend was worried about you moving away for new job, that’s adorable
True. Also true is that everyone who matters in our career progression, at least in this industry or connected ones, is very much inside this bubble.

I still can’t wrap my mind around mainstream people not knowing MBB firms but it’s really true, they mostly don’t. Or if they do, it’s not in any particular regard to other firms. I was interviewing with MBB and most folks were asking things like if i thought it was going to be as intense as Accenture 😂
Yeah I’ve spent a lot of time on Google looking up stuff like LEK and S& the past week hahaha. Still not coming natural, but hoping this helps me understand the consulting landscape a little.
Most important step in learning is self awareness and knowing what you don’t know haha
Many have no idea what consultants are.
K2 so true. I was half way through my MBA internship till I finally got it.. lol
Hahahaha i thought KPMG was a local electric and gas company (confused it with NYSEG) and PwC was just some it body shop. I had recruiters reach out to me from both while I was working for a no name company and ignored the . A year later I realized the companies were amazing career opportunities.

Oh yeah I’ve found that many people in tech won’t have heard of Deloitte, and if they have, it’s “hey isn’t that the tax prep company?” In the Bay, you’re more likely to have heard of that small tech start up then than an MBBB4
Accenture people all live in Dublin
Solution: Someone needs to produce a TV show about consulting. Is Gabriel Macht free these days? They’ll need to dramatize Power Point slides and long lunch breaks and the occasional nap.
Inspired me to land into Consulting
While I agree with the general sentiment, the fact that there are postings out there asking for experience from specific firms (or groups of firms), it’s not totally irrelevant.
Its just one data point.
