I’ve been reading a lot of FIRE books lately and want somewhere to discuss. What are the biggest takeaways from your FIRE journey/ research?

What are your favorite resources? Mine are Mr. Money Mustache, the Mad Fientist, and JL Collins’ book The Simple Path to Wealth

Quit like a millionaire is my fave book so far

Switch jobs to max income, reduce expenses to maximize cashflow, max taxed advantaged vehicles then throw money into a vanguard investment acc. Learn to be handy to reduce expenses and live a fulfilling life

A fire journey must be personalized and isn’t an end goal of retirement, but a goal of enabling you to do what you want. You still need to have a passion or hobby or job or you’ll go mad.

Healthcare is more expensive than you’d think.

FIRE bloggers all have a bit of BS to them, if they’re pulling down massive incomes from their FIRE journey stories. Beware of what they try to sell you.

Totally agree. My approach is to read a bunch of different sources and pick out what I like from each (hence this post)

So far mine are: focus on building and acquiring assets that generate income, earnings over savings (kind of the same thing but different, I need better advisors in the real estate industry to find good opportunities, when I have these assets and businesses stood up I’ll put a corporate entities over it, reducing taxes is the same (if not better) than reducing other expenses

I’m considering building up my I bonds to eventually replace my 6 month expenses emergency savings account. Any downsides I’m not considering? If I slowly ramp up and ladder, I can partially withdraw any amount if I need to after a year. Even with lower inflation in the future, I’m guessing it’s going to beat a savings account yield. Thoughts?

I was once at a dinner with a second year analyst, consultant, and partner, and the analyst said he planned on retiring by 30 and the partner and consultant laughed. Little did they know, the analyst owned his own home and rented all the rooms out so he payed no rent, never ate out, only grocery shopped, and very very rarely bought anything new. He saved most of his income, and was perfectly content with just his video games. That man was serious about not being stuck working forever.
