I left a firm I thought I would have stayed at long term a few years ago and I realized after I left (with similar pay raise) that I had no idea why I thought I liked my job before. They all told me when I left that I would be back in a few years and there is just absolutely no way that would ever happen. Much happier in the new job. High risk, high reward - I’d consider the general vibe you’ve gotten in the interview process and the people you’ll be working with
Would you mind sharing more about this? Why did you think you liked it and how did you realize that you actually didn’t? I feel like this could be me.

That’s a really personal question. I’m in a similar situation and I’m staying for several reasons. First, I really enjoy what I do and it’s not something that is in many practices (and would be a pain to set up somewhere else). Second, I’m working on trying to have kids and I know I have the autonomy, flexibility and social capital in my current position to focus on that for a while without worrying I’ll be let go. Finally, while the money would be nice, for me it buys retirement a little earlier, and that’s pretty much it. I’d rather have the first two things in this season of my life. That may change in the future.
I’ll add for perspective that I’m at a boutique firm with very reasonable billables (1500) and people I really like. If I was at the beginning of my career where I was willing to lean in more, I would almost certainly take the money and figure out the rest later.

Yes because your value would immediately be higher no matter where you go after. Also it’s just a job, so I personally don’t subscribe to “I could be at this firm for long term” mentality (but this is just me). A firm or an employment is simply a tool for me to live the life I want to live outside of work.

Is the main concern uncertainty over your future prospects, or are there other differences that will materially impact your day to day life, like a big increase in hours expectations? If the former, yes personally I’d most likely take the plunge. That amount of money can change the course of your life and I’m willing to gamble that things will work out. If the latter, then I would carefully weigh the pros vs cons and try to get clear on what my personal dealbreakers are. For example, I don’t think any amount of money would lure me back into a job billing 2400 hours. I know what that’s like and the $ isn’t worth it to me.
