My exact experience. At 35, I felt like I was headed on a certain upward trajectory of success, money, comfort. And I was. Bought my little dream house on my own, bought my dream car...now, at 47, I’m still driving that (now old but paid for) car and I lost my house to foreclosure in 2014 at age 42. 🥴 It’s not at all been what I thought it would be. But I’m still getting paid to write.
I try to stay positive, but it’s hard to picture longevity when you’ve witnessed most senior people get dusted and the gigs at the top of the business (MD, CEO ,etc) are scarce by market. Am I just being pessimistic, or does anyone else here have a hard time envisioning the business carrying them through to retirement?
Sadly, I think that this reply captures the state of the industry now...and for the foreseeable future. There are lots of reasons for how we ended up here, but the bottom line is that clients have lots of ways to buy marketing services nowadays, so careers are harder to sustain past a certain point. I also think the career advice here is solid.
This is the scary truth. Seemed so far away ten years ago...but here we are.
