Yes, I’ve seen company policies used inappropriately. For instance, an employee was reprimanded for taking time off for mental health reasons, despite our policy explicitly supporting mental wellness. It created a culture of fear rather than support, highlighting the need for clearer communication and sensitivity in policy application.
That is exactly it ..when policies are used as a stick instead of a guide, they do the opposite of what they are meant to. Your example really shows how badly it can damage trust and culture.
