Am I overthinking? My boss said I can either manage someone very difficult or be managed by her. I should manage this person, right? I dread it, but if that’s the choice, being in charge is better than being lorded over by someone super nitpicking who has trouble staying on topic, right? Please weigh in. I need to answer my boss soon.

Choose the difficult person! They have no choice but to listen to you if you are in charge! That doesn't mean you have to go out of your way to be mean or overly picky like your boss but at least you won't be the one with the thumb held down on you!

What a choice to make! I’d lean towards being the one managing, because at least you are in a position to set the stage more. Being under somebody difficult is not something I’d willingly choose. Have done it unknowingly many times before.

This is such a weird position to be put in. Working with a nitpicky nightmare of a coworker is never going to be fun, but if you have to, I guess I'd prefer to manage her than the other way around. I've dealt with micromanagers before and they make work miserable. Don't give her that power over you.

I agree that I would choose being in charge in this situation, but also, this is a really weird position to be in. Why is your boss proposing a question like that? Shouldn't your boss be dealing with the very difficult employee, not promoting them?

I so agree! But for some reason, this was not at all weird to my boss!!

What the heck kind of choice is that? It sounds like he’s trying to force you to imagine this person. He knows you wouldn’t tolerate being managed by her. I wish you luck.

Thanks! Yes, i thought this was a ridiculous choice to have to make and I actually said as much bc everyone knows this other person is SUPER difficult! And my boss said, what do you want me to do, fire her?

What is the advice on what feedback to leave for a peer who really sucks at everything y'all have worked together on?
