Any tips on looking for a new job in a close-knit legal market without tipping off your current firm you’re looking for an exit?
TLDR: I’m finishing my first year in an office that is a dead-end for me. Not enough business, continuing to over hire, terrible management, the usual. It’s very likely I won’t make goal this year due to the lack of work, and that was a wake up call that it’s time to go. But I’m currently a small legal community that loves to talk, so any tips would be appreciated.

Don’t apply by sending your resume into job postings. Instead look for openings by word of mouth, so each time you can stress the need for confidentiality. Lawyers are *supposed* to be good at keeping confidences. It still might not work to keep your intentions undercover but it’s better than just distributing your resume into the wild to a general job postings.

Ask trusted colleagues in your network who’s hiring. Look at postings to see who’s hiring, then try to connect with somebody at that firm to make a soft inquiry under the guise of general networking or some such.

Also, if you’re committed to leaving and already having issues, then it’s not the end of the world if your current firm finds out in spite of your efforts. It sounds like they’re already screwing you over and it couldn’t get much worse.

My wife and I are starting a first cycle of IVF. Given how expensive IVF is/can be, wondering if anyone has lessons learned on the insurance front—understanding it varies by plan, of course. We’re currently enrolled in HDHP w/ HSA, and have nurse consult tomorrow discuss financials among other things. Still in open enrollment, which is great timing. Thanks all. Staying hopeful.

I know it’s not specifically fertility related but Was hoping to get some feedback on similar situations

Just had a hearing on my motion to compel where OC told the judge we hadn’t conferred before filing the motion. Not only did I attempt to confer on 3 separate dates, I attached the emails and his response that he refused to confer to my motion. Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.

If you use the pomodoro method for time focus and tracking, do you bill in those increments or just keep your billablr timer going the whole time? For example, I work in 25 minute increments for large projects then I get a break. Transactional junior associate in biglaw. Working for a dedicated practice group rather than in an associate pool. For the past few months, I’ve been loaned to another practice group for a good chunk of time. While the people are decent and the hours aren’t terrible, I detest the work and don’t see a future in this new practice. My main partner says it should end in the next month, but I don’t expect that to happen. Is it a terrible idea to ask to be taken off?

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)

Layoffs. Most big firms say they're sitting on a conservative pile of cash - which I believe is true - but work will obviously not return to pre-COVID levels in the short term, probably not even in the medium term. Are Biglaw layoffs coming?
