Is taking a government consulting role a dead end if long term I want to stay in the private sector? I’m currently at a boutique risk firm (3500 employees) where I also do some transaction services. A friend is offering to refer me to a higher level valuation and transaction focused role within a B4 government & public sector practice.

From a pure technical skill perspective this feels like a step up, but does moving to government and public sector position me worse than if I stay in risk?

Thoughts on sending out assignments over the weekend? I work a lot on weekends, but I don’t expect associates too. But, because I work on weekends, I often will send out assignments by email with a clear indication in subject line and body that it does not need to be completed or worked on over the weekend. Mid-senior level transactional folks: how do you originate deals? The only deals I originate come from when one of my corporate clients randomly decides to sell a business. There has to be another way to land more deals, right?

How are 1st year litigation associates dealing with WFH? I’ve been having terrible anxiety/panic attacks, and pretty sure my billables wont exceed 110 for April. Layoffs. Most big firms say they're sitting on a conservative pile of cash - which I believe is true - but work will obviously not return to pre-COVID levels in the short term, probably not even in the medium term. Are Biglaw layoffs coming?

I have a request for interim relief pending before the court filed last Tuesday. It usually takes 1-3 Business days for a disposition. It’s now going on the 5th business day. I want to reach out to the court to follow up but don’t know how to phrase it. We need it decided like today. Any suggestions? It’s also an appellate court so I’d just be contacting the clerks office now the judge/chambers itself.

What productivity hacks do you employ? I like to shut off my email for 25 min intervals to focus on real work. It’s like a sprint of focus without being “unavailable” too long.

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!

2) Am200 firm with 1750+ billable hour requirement, less reputable in the region because it’s a satellite office, pays $35k less than option 1
