I joined a firm and left after a month when I got an offer from another firm that I previously applied to and interviewed with. I haven't faced any adverse consequences yet. My old firm handled it well, and I think everyone realizes it's just business. I think stories of lawyers bad-mouthing former associates/attorneys is overblown fear-mongering.
Basically, do what feels right for you. At the very least, exploring options is never a bad thing.
I’ll add that my small law firm just offered a job to a first year attorney that we thought would be a great fit. When my boss called to offer her the job, she sounded excited but asked how long she could consider because she has another job interview in a week. I get that she’s just being honest but it doesn’t make us feel good about it because when we offered her the job she basically told us we were second choice if the other firm had a better offer. We are a small firm so a person should be a good fit and we were all really excited about her.
It’s weird that it’s like this but I think it may have been better for her if she had accepted our position but postponed her start date to give her time to interview with the other place.
Every firm is different but that just made us feel like, “you’re obviously not that excited to work with us so don’t bother coming back.”
