Anyone in biglaw make a lateral move in their third trimester? I’m 20 weeks now, but since my first round interview is tomorrow, I’m assuming the process would take a while. Feels weird to leave the stability of my current firm, but I’m a senior associate and I’ve been miserable with junior-level assignments for months. Assuming I get an offer (the firm approached me for an interview so it seems likely), I would only move if I could negotiate full mat leave and full EOY bonus.

Yes, I lateraled 3 weeks before starting leave. I negotiated full leave, full bonus (made my move in August of that year), and promotion while on leave.

Wow, that’s amazing, thanks for sharing. How was the negotiation process when accepting the offer, and how was it integrating at the new firm after your leave? Any advice?

Yes, but keep in mind that in the latter half of your pregnancy and upon returning from you leave, you will need a lot of understanding and flexibility from your employer. You will not be the peak version of yourself. This is typically a time to spend political capital, not bank it. Consider whether a new environment is where you want to be during these vulnerable times that are coming up.

Thanks, that all makes sense and accumulated political capital is a reason to stay put. Going to weigh all the options once I know whether I have an offer.

I think there's a reason why most people wait until they're on leave to find new opportunities. Not just because of thee baby bump but to give your hormones some time to calm down nd your body some time to recover

I guess don't skip the interviews you already have if the firm is a good fit, but otherwise it could be worth waiting. Also depends on how supportive your partner or family are, though

Yeah always worth a reminder. Also that childbirth is a surgery that can take months to recover from as well, and longer if you have other complications along the way.

The benefit of waiting until after birth to go elsewhere, if you're already pretty far along, won't be that you can recover entirely during your maternal leave, but that you'll at least get a few weeks to adjust to the struggle while you fully recover. If you start somewhere before birth you're going to feel pressure to cut that time short to make a good impression, which gives you less time to adapt/more chances to struggle harder at a time when you need to be making the best impression possible

I accepted an offer in my third trimester, but I waited to start till the end of my maternity leave at my old firm, which has a generous 24 weeks of leave. I also appreciate that the new firm would want to wait for me for so long, which is the main reason I want to jump in under such tricky circumstances.

Good luck! IMO, no harm to ask what's best for you once you secure the offer.

One thing to consider is that since your pregnancy is a "preexisting condition," you might not be able to use disability to cover your maternity leave. I recently switched firms, and my disability policy has a one year wait for any preexisting conditions. I need knee replacement surgery at some point, so I may be the only weirdo to have ever read my firm's coverage terms. 🧐
