Do you have a good book of business?
No immediate book of business given that I have been in industry for 5 years or so, got pulled in by former client as my boss, who retired recently.
However, my work is in the applied AI space and I feel that could be of interest to firms.
Best way is to reach out directly to practice or industry leaders at other firms you are interested in. Recruiting firms typically work for firms, not individuals, and they have little incentive to represent you.
You also need to be prepared for a number of firms to either be un willing to take direct admit partners, be temporarily unwilling due to timing (especially with current AI uncertainty), and/or interested only in gaps that they have prioritize to fit but which are not aligned to your experience. I get approached by at least a dozen partners in similar situations every year and very few even make it to a first conversation.
Coming back from industry will also likely lead to immediate questions about viability of your relationships and how long it may take you to rebuild a pipeline. You should be prepared with a clear story for that and even a list of key contacts and their buying history. Do your homework about how much each firm expects partners in your practice to sell and deliver annually, as well as what their models are.
It’s also a bit surprising that you don’t have connections at other firms if you were in the consulting space for a long time. I’ve been in consulting for nearly 30 years and there isn’t a firm of any significant size that I don’t have multiple contacts at. People have moved around over the years and I’m confident I could pick up the phone and get someone to talk anywhere. Why do you think you have so few contacts elsewhere?
P1 Then you must be making a 💩 ton of calls everyday. Good for you!!
