As a former clinician, I’d say stay away from Cerner. Epic is much more of an innovative platform and company
Thank you!
Cerner primarily is a software provider for hospital/provider system.
Think of it like an ERP for hospitals.
This is sort of my worry tbh. It seems very specific and I’m not sure how much I’d really be learning. That’s very helpful, though, thank you!
It’s also the EMR for hospitals. Those systems hold some of the most valuable data today.
That’s a fair point!
I'm not sure what their direction is now that Oracle made an acquisition.
Epic is more user friendly unless it's excessively customized. In my experience some of the provider ordering processes aren't as streamlined.
Stay away from EMR
I worked at Cerner for a few years. I actually learned a lot of technical skills there and made a ton of connections in the industry.
They provide the systems that hospitals and providers use to document information in medical records, place orders, capture authorizations, bill claims, etc. You can learn a lot about how different health systems work, what workflows are important to them, what data they use to manage their business, etc. if you get placed on the right solution/projects. Definitely recommend it as a stepping stone into healthcare tech.
That’s super helpful, thank you so much! Especially the part about learning technical skills and using it as a stepping stone into healthcare tech.
I worked a lot with Cerner as a vendor on my project. We were deploying a healthcare system. The Cerner implementation consultants were responsible for assessing current state, providing reccomendation on future state workflow, working with clinicians on what capabilities the new system has, configuring it to what they need, and providing on site go live support with functional aspects of the system, as well as permissions and light-configuration details. Also some on site traininh was involved in addition to formal training on the new system They'd work with their IT team for any engineering related issues. I worked alongside them for 3 years or so
This is super useful background!! Thank you so much.
Can you go and find out.
